In order to understand Trump supporters, I asked a colleague of mine for some good examples of Trump’s “populist” policies and statements. He gave me the following list of five policies and I asked him to explain why he considers them to be good policies, not simply “populist”: 1. Shutting down the Muslim travel ban. This is Trump’s “closing the borders” policy. In his mind, it is a measure against Muslim immigrants. Trump is defending the country from terrorists by closing its borders and saying “we don’t know who is coming in, but we need to defend ourselves.” Note that he only justifies this measure by saying that we are not sure who is coming in (not that some immigrants do not pose a danger). 2. Building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Trump is demanding the building of a physical barrier against immigrants coming into the U.S. because of fear that he considers to be a “security” issue. He sees immigrants as a threat and thinks that they are coming to destroy the country. His objective is to stop immigrants from entering the country. 3. Banning the use of H1-B visas by companies to hire foreign workers. Here is Trump’s “we don’t need foreigners” policy. He is emphasizing the need for American workers by imposing restrictions on the use of H1-B visas by foreign companies. He is also emphasizing the need You do a great job!
